KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2020) – In front of a great, loud crowd of Midshipmen at Brooks Stadium, the USMMA men's soccer team played Division I opponent Army West Point to a physical 1-0 defeat in the first of the two academies' home-and-home exhibitions on Saturday night.

The Black Knights controlled most of the play throughout the night, but the Mariners put forward a great defensive effort, and also had their offensive chances as well.

The game was scoreless after the first 45 minutes of play, as Army had two shots on goal that USMMA sophomore Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) turned aside, one with a great diving stop to his left.

Merchant Marine's best chance of the entire night came in the 11th minute on a corner kick by junior Michael Melton (Denver, Colo.) that travel to the near side, where classmate Abram Ehrhorn (Papillion, Neb.) headed the ball down low, but it was blocked away by an Army defender. That was immediately followed by a low rip on the rebound by senior Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) that was also blocked.

The Black Knights' goal came in the 59th minute off of a set piece on a corner kick. The kick was taken by junior Oscar Pereira and caromed off a Mariner defender in the box directly to sophomore Justin McStay, who was just outside the box, and he ripped it into the lower right corner of the net for the only tally on the night.

Army outshot the Mariners, 16-6, in the affair, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Freshman Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) came in to play the second half at keeper for USMMA and made one save. There was also a phenomenal takeaway on defense by junior Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.) to stop an Army break in the 68th minute. For the Black Knights, junior Jacob Suppiah played all 90 minutes in net and did not face one shot on goal.

The Mariners will travel up to West Point next Saturday, Oct. 3, to close out the home-and-home with Army West Point in a game scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (Eastern) at the Black Knights' Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.
