NEW LONDON, Conn. (Oct. 31, 2020) – The USMMA men's soccer team lost on the road at arch-rival Coast Guard, 2-0, on Saturday at the Bears' Nitchman Field. Prior to the game, both teams honored their seniors, who were playing in the final contest of their careers.

For the Mariners that was Brandon Cordova (Apple Valley, Minn.), Joe Clark (Baltimore, Md.), Hunter West (Southampton, N.Y.), Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.), Jack Davis (Cape Carteret, N.C.), Ryan Haines (Marlton, N.J.) and Luke Sturtz (Norman, Okla.)

On the pitch, the Mariners controlled a lot of the play early in the first half, including a stretch of under a minute where they earned three corner kicks, but had chances turned away by the Coast Guard defense.

The Bears broke the deadlock with a tally in the 25th minute by junior Gabe Gallant, assisted by classmate Robbie Fugett. After that, the hosts kept the pressure on USMMA with four more shots over the next ten minutes, but none found the mark.

Coast Guard held an 8-1 lead in shots at halftime, with Cordova recording the only attempt for the Mariners shortly after being subbed in, which sailed wide right in the 45th minute.

Merchant Marine had two of the first three chances in the second half, but the Mariners were unable to find the equalizer after shots by juniors Daniel Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) and Connor Damaré (Slidell, La.)

The Bears doubled their lead in the 76th minute, when Fugget found the back of the net, on what wound up being the final shot of the game.

For USMMA, sophomore Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) made one save, while his counterpart for Coast Guard, senior James Morrison didn't face a shot on goal.
