Despite Strong Second Half, Men's Basketball Drops Landmark Opener At Drew, 79-70

MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 29, 2015) – Despite trimming a 21-point deficit early in the second half down to just five points with under five minutes to go, the USMMA men's basketball team wasn't able to complete the rally and lost its Landmark opener at Drew University Wednesday night, 79-70. The Mariners fall to 3-2 (0-1 Landmark) with the setback, while Drew improves to 2-3 (1-0 Landmark).

The Mariners had three players register double-digits in scoring, led by junior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) who had 15 points. Senior Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, Kan.) had 14 points and classmate David Smith (Lakewood, Wash.) contributed 13. Miller also led the squad with nine rebounds on the night.

Three Rangers scored 20+ points, as senior Kevin Herring II led all players in the game with 22 points and sophomore Yonathan Napoleon and freshman Nate Aldrich both had 20 points each. Hering II recorded a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Mariners trailed by 21 points on three separate occasions early in the second half, with the latest coming at 16:15, when Herring II hit a three-pointer to make the score 49-28 for the home squad. Over the next 11-plus minutes, Merchant Marine stormed back to within five points after a remarkable 33-17 run made the score 66-61 in favor of Drew, however, the Rangers were able to maintain their advantage and hold on for the victory.
