LYNDHURST, N.J. (March 27, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team opened Skyline Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Yeshiva on Friday afternoon at Breslin Field. The Mariners won the opener 10-5 and took the second game 14-4 to improve to 7-5 (2-0 Skyline), while the Maccabees fell to 0-16 (0-8 Skyline).

Game 1 Highlights
- USMMA opened the scoring in the first inning as junior Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) registered a sacrifice fly RBI to give the Blue and Gray a 1-0 lead. Yeshiva responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and another two in the second to take a 4-1 lead.
- Kings Point exploded for a five-run third inning to take control of the game. Junior Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) started the rally with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.), then freshman Jason Brown (Marlton, N.J.) added a sacrifice fly RBI to tie it up at four. Freshman Ryan Melton (Newnan, Ga.) scored on a wild pitch, and senior Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) came home on a catcher's error to make it 6-4.
- Kruer added another RBI single in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-4 then Melton delivered an RBI double in the sixth and KP added two more runs in the seventh on an RBI double from freshman Michael Brown (Dumfries, Va.) and a sacrifice fly by Chiappetti to push the lead to 10-4 en route to a 10-5 victory.
- Kruer led the Mariners with three hits, while sophomore Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas), Chiappetti, Melton, Cahalan, and Brown all had one.
- Kruer and Chiappetti both had multi-RBI games with two each, while Melton, Brown, Troutt, and Brown had one.
- Kings Point stole 12 bases in the contest as Vazquez led the way with four, while Kruer and Cahalan had three and two of their own, and junior Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.), Chiappetti, and Melton each had one.
- The Blue and Gray had four extra base hits, with Chiappetti, Melton, Cahalan, and Brown each recording a double.
- Freshman Tucker Bearden (Lakeland, Tenn.) picked up his third win of the season, going four innings, allowing five hits and four runs with four strikeouts. Classmate Levi Reale (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore Louis Inserra (Coplay, Pa.) both threw one scoreless inning each. Sophomore Travis Campbell (Alba, Texas) allowed three hits and one run with three strikeouts in an inning of work.
Game 2 Highlights
- USMMA struck first in the opening inning as Vazquez scored on a wild pitch to give them a 1-0 lead.
- The Maccabees answered with three runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead.
- The Mariners went ahead in the top of the fourth inning when Kruer delivered a two-run single to put Kings Point back in front, 4-3. After Yeshiva tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, USMMA responded immediately with a two-run top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly RBI by junior Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) and an RBI single from Cahalan to make it 6-4.
- Kings Point broke the game open in the sixth inning with a five-run outburst. Melton started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by multiple runs scoring on wild pitches, and freshman Thomas Byrne (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) capped the inning with a two-run single to extend the lead to 11-4.
- The visitors added three more runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Kruer, an RBI double from Brown, and an RBI single by freshman Axel Prechel (Corvallis, Ore.), to secure the 14-4 win and the doubleheader sweep.
- Kings Point posted their fifth double-digit hit effort with three players registering multi-hit games as Vazquez, Melton, and Brown had two hits apiece. Freshman Drew Davis (Springboro, Ohio), Prechel, Kruer, Brown, Byrne, and Cahalan all had one hit each.
- Kruer had a team-high three RBIs, while Byrne posted two, and Melton, Brown, Prechel, Cahalan, and Olivares had one each.
- The Blue and Gray posted eight steals, with Vazquez and Troutt leading the way with two, and Kruer, Davis, Gamez, and Brown recording one.
- Kruer picked up his second win of the season, going four innings, allowing six hits, four runs, and striking out a career-high seven batters. The Mariner bullpen was lights out as Reale struck out two batters and allowed one hit in an inning of work, while Inserra and Campbell pitched scoreless innings and allowed one hit each. Senior Parker Hutchins (Lucas, Texas) allowed no hits and runs.
