Baseball Drops Skyline Doubleheader To St. Joseph’s-Long Island On The Road

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 24, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team dropped both games of a Skyline Conference doubleheader on the road against St. Joseph's-Long Island on Friday afternoon, falling in game one by the score of 4-3 and 7-6 in game two. The Mariners fall to 17-12 (9-5 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles improve to 17-16 (13-3 Skyline).

Game 1 Highlights

  • The Mariners struck first in the opening inning as junior Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) delivered an RBI single to give the Blue and Gray a 1-0 lead.
  • St. Joseph's-Long Island responded in the bottom of the first inning with two runs on an RBI double and an RBI single to take a 2-1 advantage.
  • Merchant Marine answered in the second inning as freshman Thomas Byrne (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) ripped an RBI double to even the score at 2-2.
  • USMMA regained the lead in the third inning when senior Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) drove in a run on a groundout to make it 3-2.
  • The Golden Eagles responded in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on an error to tie the game before adding another run on an RBI groundout to take a 4-3 lead.
  • St. Joseph's-Long Island was able to hold off one last charge from the Mariners in the top of the seventh to win game one 4-3.
  • Sophomore Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas), junior Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.), Troutt, and Byrne each recorded a hit.
  • Troutt and Byrne each drove in a run.
  • Sophomore Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.), freshman Ryan Melton (Newnan, Ga.), and Vazquez each scored a run.
  • Vazquez and Byrne each recorded a stolen base.
  • Freshman Baxter Hamilton (Sugar Land, Texas) went six innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out four batters.
  • Paul McNally earned the win for the Golden Eagles, tossing six innings and allowing four hits and three runs with five strikeouts, while Ryan Barlow secured the save with a scoreless seventh inning and one strikeout.

Game 2 Highlights

  • St. Joseph's-Long Island struck first in the second inning with a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Kings Point responded in a big way in the third inning as Kruer launched a grand slam to left field, to give the Mariners a 4-2 advantage.
  • The Golden Eagles cut into the deficit in the fifth inning with an RBI single to make it 4-3.
  • Merchant Marine added to its lead in the sixth inning as Melton delivered an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Carter O'Neel (Omaha, Neb.) to extend the lead to 6-3.
  • St. Joseph's rallied in the seventh inning, scoring twice on a fielder's choice and a groundout to trim the deficit to 6-5.
  • The Golden Eagles completed the comeback in the eighth inning, tying the game on an RBI single before taking the lead on a fielder's choice to make it 7-6.
  • The Mariners were unable to respond in the ninth as St. Joseph's-Long Island held on for the 7-6 victory.
  • O'Neel led the Mariners with two hits, while junior Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.), Gamez, Cahalan, Kruer, and Melton each added one hit.
  • Kruer led KP with a game-high four RBIs, while O'Neel and Melton each drove in one run.
  • O'Neel, Kruer, Cahalan, Melton, Vazquez, and Troutt each scored a run.
  • Kruer blasted his program-leading 21st career home run and 11th of the season.
  • Byrne and Chiappetti each recorded a stolen base.
  • Senior Eddie Lippert (Deer Park, N.Y.) went three innings, allowing two runs with one strikeout, while sophomore Travis Campbell (Alba, Texas) tossed 2.2 innings, allowing one run with one strikeout.
  • Ryan Reynolds earned the win for the Golden Eagles, coming on in relief and tossing three scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Merchant Marine is back in action on Sunday, April 26, for a road Skyline Conference doubleheader against Mount St. Vincent at Bartoszek Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
