How It Happened
The Blue and Gray struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) delivered an RBI single up the middle to give USMMA the early 1-0 lead. After freshman Ryan Melton (Newnan, Ga.) walked, senior Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) followed with a two-run single to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Coast Guard battled back in the top of the fifth inning to even the score. The Bears first got on the board on an RBI single combined with a fielding error before adding a run on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. They then tied the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
The Bears threatened at the top of the seventh inning with a leadoff triple, but sophomore Travis Campbell (Alba, Texas) locked it down, retiring the next three batters on a foul out and two pop-ups to keep the game tied.
Coast Guard put another runner in scoring position in the eighth inning after reaching on an error and advancing to third on a throwing miscue. Once again, Campbell was huge, escaping the jam with a bunt strikeout and a groundout to preserve the 3-3 deadlock.
The game remained deadlocked into extra innings before Kings Point walked it off in the bottom of the 10th. Freshman Michael Brown (Dumfries, Va.) reached on a fielding error, allowing Cahalan to come around and score the winning run and secure the 4-3 victory for Merchant Marine.
