Women’s Cross Country Dominates The Field To Win Mount St. Mary Invite

MILTON, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team put on an incredible performance at the 12th annual MSMC Knight Invitational on Saturday, hosted by Skyline foe Mount St. Mary up at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome. The Mariners won the event with 31 points, and the next closest team, second-place Cobleskill, had 116 points.

USMMA had four runners in the top-10, as senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led the way with a second-place showing in the 6K race with a time of 24:51. Freshman Sayra Raya (Wasco, Calif.) was just three seconds behind in third place in 24:54. Sophomore Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) and senior Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) were the next two to cross the finish line for the Mariners, just two seconds apart, as Grafton came in fifth in 25:26 and Buonerba crossed in 25:28. 

Rounding out the top-five for Merchant Marine was senior Briana Broccoli (Herndon, Va.), who came in 15th in 26:29. Classmate Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.) and sophomore Brooke Jorstad (La Crosse, Wis.) worked to take points away from opposing teams, as Lewis place 16th, right behind Broccoli, in 26:31, and Jorstad finished 22nd in 27:00.

The Mariners are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 12, when they travel up to St. Lawrence University way up in Canton, N.Y., to take part in the Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational/Pre-Atlantic Regional Meet. The women's 6K race is scheduled to start at noon on the campus course at St. Lawrence.
