OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2019) – Official results came in late Saturday for yesterday's NYIT Invitational, at which the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team placed third overall out of the 17 teams that scored. The Mariners were also the first place DIII team at the event, and also finished ahead of a couple of Division I and Division II schools as well.

Freshman Sayra Raya (Wasco, Calif.) led USMMA with a time of 20:39.13 on the 5K course, which was good for ninth place. Senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) was not far behind, placing 11th in 21:00.53.
Sophomore Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) came in 20th place and scored 18 points for the Mariners in 21:31.71, while senior Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) finished 27th and scored 24 points after crossing the line in 22:03.60. Sophomore Brooke Jorstad (La Crosse, Wis.) and senior Briana Broccoli (Herndon, Va.) placed 29th (25 points) and 31st (27 points) in 22:15.16 and 22:19.00, respectively. Junior Grace Poe (Long Point, Conn.) was the final Merchant Marine runner to score, as she got 33 points after her 37th-place finish with a time of 22:39.52.

The Mariners' next race is Saturday, Oct. 5, up at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Milton, N.Y., at the 12th Annual MSMC Knight Invitational hosted by fellow Skyline Conference school Mount St. Mary. The women's 8K race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
