Mariner Women Dominate To Win First Skyline Championship In 13 Years!

MILTON, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2018) – All of the Mariners' top-five finishers came in 10th place or better, including freshman Robin King (Raymond, Ohio) claiming the individual championship, leading the USMMA women's cross country team to the Skyline title on Thursday for the first time since 2005 in the conference championship meet hosted by Mount St. Mary College at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome up in Ulster County. 

The Mariners recorded the lowest point total in program history with just 23 points, finishing well ahead of second-place St. Joseph's-L.I., which had 68 points. Sarah Lawrence rounded out the top-three with 113 points. 

With the combination of the Mariner men also winning the Skyline Championship on Thursday, it's the first time since 2005 that both the men's and women's squads have swept the titles. 

King broke the tape of the 6K race with a time of 24:50.97. Classmate Brooke Jorstad (La Crosse, Wis.) came in second in the race in 25:38.40. Fellow plebe Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) was fourth in 26:09.67, while junior Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) placed sixth with a time of 26:18.38. Classmate Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.) closed out the scoring for the Mariners' top-five with a 10th-place showing in 26:54.19. 

Stealing points from other teams and rounding out USMMA's top-seven were junior Valerie Bowman (Newark, Ohio) and senior Kelsey Ramirez (Stevensville, Mich.) in 25th (28:27.13) and 26th (28:29.81) place, respectively.

With her first-place showing, King earned both the Skyline Runner and Rookie of the Year Awards. With their top-seven finishes overall, King, Jorstad, Grafton and Buonerba were named to the All-Skyline Conference First Team, while Lewis landed on the Second Team. Additionally, sixth-year head coach David Lawrence Jr. was selected as the Skyline Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year by his peers – making him doubly praised on the day, as he was also the Men's XC Coach of the Year. . 

The Mariners will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 3, when they travel right back up to the Hudson Valley Sportsdome for the ECAC Championship Meet. The men's 8K race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
