WATCH: Kappas' Record-Setting Assist

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2019) – Senior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) now sits atop the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball record books as the career-leader in total assists, as she moved past former Mariner Andrea Peer '02 during USMMA's 3-0 home Skyline win over Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday night (25-14, 25-13, 25-17).

Coming into the night, Kappas needed eight assists to set the record and she reached the mark towards the end of the first set. It was part of a 36-assist effort for the senior, who also picked up six digs, three service aces and a solo block on the evening.

With the win, the Mariners improve to 17-6 (10-1 Skyline), while the Gryphons fall to 12-14 (5-4 Skyline) in defeat. Merchant Marine has now completed Skyline Conference action and, thanks to this win and a loss by Mount St. Vincent to Manhattanville tonight, the Mariners are guaranteed a first-round bye in the upcoming Skyline Tournament beginning the week of Nov. 4. More info on the conference playoffs will be available on www.USMMASports.com closer to the home semifinal match on Nov. 7.

Freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied a match-high 16 kills and two assisted blocks, while sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) added eight kills to go along with four service aces. Sophomores Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) and Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) all chipped in on offense with four kills apiece, and Fromm also led all players in the match with three blocks (all assisted).

Seniors Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) had strong performances in the Mariner back row with 11 and nine digs, respectively.

For Sarah Lawrence, junior Melanie Coleman led the way with six kills, while sophomore Isabel Pecora had six assists, freshman Davis Mathis picked up nine digs and classmate Clarise Steiner added eight digs. Both Coleman and Pecora recorded two assisted blocks each.

The Mariners will take over a week off from competition and will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2, at a non-conference tri-match at Ramapo College. They will take on the host Roadrunners at 11 a.m. before closing out the day against Lehman in a neutral-site match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Any live links for the matches will be available on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page
