Mariners Defeat Old Westbury, 3-0, Monday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2019) – The USMMA women's volleyball team swept Old Westbury on Monday night in a Skyline Conference match that was a "home contest" for the Panthers, but played at the Mariners' Liebertz Gymnasium. Merchant Marine improves to 16-6 (9-1 Skyline) with the victory, while OW falls to 7-10 (2-6 Skyline). 

Sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) led all players in the match with 14 kills, while also recording six digs and a service ace. Senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 32 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double with nine total. Sophomore Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added nine kills and the only two blocks of the match. 

In her 100th career match, senior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) picked up five digs in two sets, while freshman Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.) had four in the final set. Three other Mariners had three digs each – sophomores Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) and Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) and freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.). Smith also contributed offensively with eight kills. 

For Old Westbury, junior Daesha Garrison had a team-best six kills and senior Joelle Desrosiers chipped in with four. Junior Ally Parke registered nine assists and junior Monica Crespo led the Panthers with nine digs, tying Kappas for the match-high.
