PURCHASE, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team lost on the road at Manhattanville College, 3-2, Wednesday night at the Valiants' Kennedy Gym. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 13-6 (6-1 Skyline), while Manhattanville improves to 14-5 (5-0 Skyline) with the victory.
After splitting the first two sets by identical 25-18 scores, the Mariners went ahead in the match with a 25-23 win in the third set. However, Manhattanville forced the deciding set with a 25-18 win in the fourth, and then the last set went into extra points, with the Valiants just narrowly coming out on top, 17-15.
Freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) put down a team-high 23 kills and was one of three Mariners who recorded a double-double, as she picked up 10 digs. The rookie also added five blocks (four assisted) and two service aces. Sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) also registered double-doubles, as Gilbertson had 16 kills and 12 digs, while Kappas dished out 46 assists to go along with 10 digs. Gilbertson also led the Mariners with three aces.
For the Valiants, senior Austen Brauer had a match-high 28 kills, while sophomore Alejandra Figueroa added 19. Freshman setter Vianca Vital dished out 50 assists as part of a double-double effort with 17 digs.
Up next, the Mariners will look to get back into the win column when they host Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island next Tuesday, Oct. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
