Smith And Kappas Repeat Same Skyline Weekly Awards For Second-Straight Week

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2019) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman outside hitter Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) was selected as the Skyline Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for the second-straight week and the third time this season, while senior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll also for the second-straight week and third time this season.

The praise comes after the duo helped the Mariners to a 2-0 week with sweeps over Skyline opponents Mount St. Mary (at home on Tuesday) and Farmingdale State (on the road on Thursday).

Smith put down an incredible 39 total kills over the six sets (6.5 per set) in the two victories. In the win over the Rams on Thursday, the rookie set a new Academy record with 8.33 kills per set (career-best 25 total kills over three sets), as part of a double-double effort as she tied for the match-high with 11 digs. She hit at a .308 clip for the week.

Kappas dished out 69 total assists over two matches for an average of 11.5 assists per set. She had 40 assists on Thursday in a road Skyline win at Farmingdale State. The senior also picked up 2.67 digs per set on the week.
