Smith Sets Academy Record For Kills Per Set In A Match In Road Win At Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2019) – The USMMA women's volleyball team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State, 3-0, on Thursday night (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) at the Rams' Lynch Sports Center. The Mariners' winning-streak extends to 10 matches, as they improve to 12-5 (5-0 Skyline). FSC falls to 10-8 (2-1 Skyline) with the loss. 

Freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) set a new Academy record for kills per set in a match with a career-high 25 kills over the three sets – 8.33 per set. She bested former Mariner Kate Lefler '19, who had 7.67 kills per set in a win over Yeshiva back in 2017. The freshman also recorded her fourth double-double of the year tying for the match-high with 11 digs. 

Senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) registered 40 assists on the night, while sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.), like Smith, had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs to go along with three service aces. Kappas just missed out on a double-double, as she finished with nine digs. Senior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) also picked up nine digs on the night. 

Sophomores Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.), Juliet Vendl (Colorado Spring, Colo.) and Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) also contributed to the offense in the win, as Fromm put down six kills, Vendl had five and Pinzon recorded three from the right side. Fromm and Vendl both had one solo block each, while Pinzon teamed with Fromm on another block. 

For the Rams, junior Alicja Zaborowska led the way with six kills, while freshman setter Lexi Cavalieri dished out 17 assists and two players tied for the team-high with digs apiece – sophomores Madisyn Pozo and Kellianne Dempsey. Sophomore Kate Flamio led all players on the night with four service aces and senior Kelsey Voiklis had a match-high five blocks. 

The Mariners have this weekend off from competition and will return to action on Monday night, Oct. 7, when they host the 2018 Skyline Champions Mount St. Vincent in a key conference showdown.
