KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team hosted a non-conference tri-match on Saturday and celebrated Senior Day prior to the first match. The Mariners defeated both Rutgers-Newark (25-13, 25-18, 25-22) and former Landmark Conference foe Moravian (25-21, 25-22, 25-19) to improve to 10-5 on the year, including eight straight sweeps.

USMMA honored seniors Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.), Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) with a special Senior Day ceremony in the morning prior to first serve against Rutgers-Newark. To view a photo gallery of the ceremony and the first match of the day by LTJG Ben Wiese '17, follow this link.

Against the Scarlet Raiders, freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) put down a match-best 17 kills, while sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded nine kills. Kappas dished out 34 assists to lead all players, and Ibinson picked up 17 digs to tie for the match-high.

Sophomores Juliet Vendl (Colorado Spring, Colo.) and Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) also chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively, as Vendl had six kills, two aces and a block and Fromm registered seven kills and put down two assisted-blocks.

In the nightcap, the Mariners, who were members of the Landmark Conference with Moravian for nine season, had never defeated the Greyhounds over that span. The first two sets were close, but went in favor of the hosts before Merchant Marine put the match away with the third-set win.

Smith had 18 kills as part of a double-double effort with 10 digs. Vendl tallied nine kills and three blocks (one solo), and Kappas again had a monster match passing, as she recorded 35 assists in the three sets. Ibinson had 12 digs and Gilbertson picked up 10.

The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday night, Oct. 1, when they host Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary beginning at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gym. Live stats and live video feed of all three matches on Saturday will be available with a link on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page
