Mariners Down SUNY Maritime On The Road In Three Sets

BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2019) – Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) registered a match-high 15 kills to lead the USMMA women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of SUNY Maritime Thursday night in Skyline Conference action. The final set scores were 25-16, 25-8, and 25-14. 

USMMA improved to 8-5 overall, 2-0 in Skyline action, as three Mariners combined for 10 aces. Seniors Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) each served up four, while Ibinson scooped up a match-high 14 digs. Sophomore Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) chipped in with two aces and six kills and senior Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tallied six kills with three total blocks.

Freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out the scoring with nine kills in the Mariners victory, while senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) recorded 33 assists over the three sets.

Celyna Custodio led the way for the Privateers with five kills and a block. Abby Solomos had two aces and 13 digs. Maritime is now 3-9 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. 

Back-to-back blocks by USMMA opened the match, 2-0. Two of Gilbertson's kills and an ace from Hudson pushed the Mariners lead to 5-1. The two teams then battled point-for-point until a kill by Smith sparked at 5-0 rally and forced the Privateers to call a timeout at 14-6. Out of the break, Maritime chipped away at the gap despite USMMA pushing forward. An ace served up by Solomos brought the Privateers within two points, 17-15. However, the Mariners produced an 8-1 run to reach the final set score of 25-16. 

USMMA kept its momentum heading into the second set with nine unanswered points. The two teams exchanged service control leading to a 14-5 score. The Privateers only scored three more points and the Mariners cruised to a 25-8 win and a 2-0 match lead. 

Again, the Mariners claimed an early lead, 8-0, as they looked for the three-set sweep. The opening rally was fueled on kills from Vendl and Gilbertson, Fromm's two aces and a few Privateer errors. A kill and solo block by Custodio interrupted the run to put Maritime on the scoreboard. Yet, USMMA continued to push ahead with three unanswered points to reach double-digit points, 11-2.The Mariners maintained a steady 10-point lead over the Privateers before winning the set 25-14 on Gilbertson's 15th kill of the match. 

For the match, USMMA posted a +26 edge (40-14) in kills and a 10-4 aces advantage. 

USMMA women's volleyball returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, to host Rutgers-Newark and Moravian at the Liebertz Gym for a tri-match on Senior Day. First serve in the opening match is scheduled for 11 a.m. against Rutgers-Newark. Prior to the action, the Mariners will pay tribute to their three graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony.
