KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2019) – Senior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) served up a match-high nine aces to lead the USMMA women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Yeshiva University Tuesday night in the squad's Skyline Conference-opener. The final set scores were 25-6, 25-7, and 25-6. With the win, the Mariners improve to 5-5 on the season (1-0 Skyline). The Maccabees are now 0-9 overall (0-4 Skyline).
For the match, USMMA hit .552 as a team with freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) guiding the way with a .476 average (13-3-21). Two Mariners were perfect on attack. Sophomore Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) registered six kills and Jourdin Thompson (Brighton, Colo.) added four kills in her first appearance of the season. In total, the Mariners served up 15 aces. Smith registered three to go along with sophomore Cadee Fromm's (Enid, Okla.) two and Kappas nine.
For Yeshiva, Devorah Chasen notched the team's lone kill while three different Maccabees, Maya Rose, Rebekah Bargraser, and Tehilla Teigman, each added points with blocks. The remaining 16 points for Yeshiva were scored off of USMMA errors.
The Mariners cruised through the first set, claiming and early 5-0 lead on kills from sophomore Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) and Smith and two of Kappas' aces. USMMA put together a series of five mini runs to capture the set. With Kappas back at the service line, 20-6, she served back-to-back aces before Smith tallied back-to-back kills to reach set-point. Sophomore Caroline Elliott (Ridgewood, N.J.) closed out the first set with a solo block, 25-6.
The second set saw the lone stalemate of the match, a 1-1 start, after both teams dealt service errors. The Mariners did reclaim the lead, but the Maccabees kept the score tight with a one-point difference, 8-7. Yet a kill from sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) sparked a 17-0 run served by Kappas and fueled by Fromm, Smith, Pinzon and Gilbertson. Back-to-back Yeshiva errors gave USMMA a 25-7 win.
Leading 2-0 in the third set, Kappas picked right back up where she ended the second set, serving up her seventh ace of the match. Once again, the Mariners capitalized on two 7-0 runs to pull ahead 15-2 and sending the Maccabees into a timeout. Out of the break, Yeshiva added four more points to the scoreboard to get to 19-6; however, that was the end of their scoring. Six unanswered points including Kappas' final two aces brought the set to an end, 25-6, and the match, 3-0.
Up next, the USMMA women's volleyball team returns to action this Friday, Sept. 20, when the Mariners host the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Leibertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, N.Y.
