PURCHASE, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team completed a perfect Skyline Conference regular season on Saturday with a pair of sweeps over Old Westbury (25-8, 25-10, 25-22) and Purchase (25-3, 25-14, 25-13) up at Purchase College. With the two victories, the Mariners claim the Skyline Regular Season title and the #1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament next week.

USMMA has now won a program-record 15-straight matches, as the Mariners' record improves to 18-5 (10-0 Skyline) on the season. They have not lost a match since Sept. 22, and, impressively, have only dropped one set in the past 15 contests.

In the victory over the Old Westbury Panthers, freshman Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) put down a match-best 13 kills on a .579 hitting percentage (13k-2e-19a), while also leading all players in the match with seven digs. Classmate Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded 12 kills and junior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out an astounding 31 assists over just two sets.

Freshman Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) added seven kills and sophomore Jourdin Thompson (Brighton, Colo.) chipped in with a match-high four service aces. The Mariners hit at a .376 clip in the match (46k-14e-85a), while holding OW to a .020 hitting percentage (8k-7e-50a).

In the win over the Purchase Panthers, Bowman again led all players in the match in kills, this time with eight. She accounted for 12 of the Mariners' points, as she also recorded four service aces. Classmate Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) registered six kills and Gilbertson had five kills and a match-best five service aces.

Kappas had 13 assists in two sets and freshman Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) dished out 11 in the third set. Defensively, junior Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) tied for the match-high with six digs over two sets.

With the #1 seed in the upcoming Skyline Championships, the Mariners have secured a bye into the semifinal round of the tournament. They will host the Skyline semis this Thursday, Nov. 1, against the winner of the #4 vs. #5 match (which is yet to be determined, as conference play ends tomorrow).
