KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 4, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team swept visiting Pratt, 3-0, on Monday night in the Mariners' home-opener at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The scores of the sets were 25-12, 25-14 and 25-15. With the victory, USMMA improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Cannoneers fall to 0-1 to start the year.
Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led all players in the match with nine kills, while junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) added seven and senior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had six. Sophomore setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out a match-high 27 assists and was one of two Mariners to tie for the team-high with five digs – senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) was the other.
For the second straight contest, senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) recorded the match-high in blocks with five. Gleason also had three blocks on the night.
For Pratt, sophomore Marlena Todd led the way both offensively with seven kills and defensively with a match-high seven digs. Freshman setter Alivia Senevoravong added 12 assists and six digs in the losing effort.
The wait will not be long for the Mariners to get back out on the court, as they will host Yeshiva University tomorrow night – Tuesday, Sept. 5 – in both teams' Skyline Conference-opener. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available on the USMMA Volleyball Schedule Page.
