Mariners Triumph Over Non-Conference Opponent Hunter At Home Tuesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2018) – The USMMA women's swimming & diving team defeated visiting Hunter College,161-62 in non-conference action on Tuesday night at the O'Hara Hall Pool. With the victory, the Mariners remain undefeated on the season with a 7-0 record, while the Hawks fall to 8-3 in defeat.

Merchant Marine won 12 of the 13 events of the meet. Below are the Mariners that had first-place finishes: 

  • Senior Liz Grove (Winchester, Va.), sophomore Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.), freshman Victoria Kirshner (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and junior Pamela Grod (Northbrook, Ill.) in the 200 medley relay (1:59.26)
  • Sophomore Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.) in the 1000 freestyle (11:28.41 – a season best by nine seconds) and the 500 free (5:42.92)
  • Kirshner in the 200 free (2:03.88 – a season-best by five seconds)
  • Grod in the 50 free (26.78) and the 100 free (59.25 – a season-best by two seconds)
  • Grove in the 200 individual medley (2:24.62 – impressive for her first time swimming the event this season)
  • Freshman Anastasya Sergojan (Olympia, Wash.) in the one-meter dive (53.25) and the three-meter dive (47.25)
  • Lou in the 100 backstroke (1:04.65 – a season-best by one second) and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.80)
  • and freshman Christina Hogan (North Andover, Mass.), sophomore Fallon Wulff (Chapel Hill, N.C.), freshman Eliza Miller (Richmond, Ky.) and sophomore Marley Rakow (Bishopville, Md.) in the 200 free relay (1:51.63) 

Additionally, these swimmers below had season-best times: 

  • Miller in the 200 free by one second (third place in 2:12.76)
  • Sophomore Sara Cosenza (Peoria, Ariz.) in the 200 free by 0.5 seconds (second place in 2:11.51)
  • Freshman Jennifer Stelnicki (Chicago, Ill.) in the 200 IM by three seconds (second place in 2:30.59)
  • and junior Colleen Griffin (Kinnelon, N.J.) in the 100 free by four seconds (fifth place in 1:04.21) 

Up next, the Mariners will host arch-rival Coast Guard this Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. at the O'Hara Hall Pool.
