KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2015) – The USMMA women's swimming team took on non-conference opponents Old Westbury and York College on Wednesday night at Old Westbury's Clark Athletic Center Pool. The Mariners defeated both the Panthers and Cardinals by the identical scores of 59-33 to improve to 5-1 in dual meets so far this season.
Merchant Marine touched first in all 11 events on the night, including the final event, the 200 free relay, in which the squad conceded its team points. Four swimmers won all three events that they took part in at the meet: freshman Hallie Breidenthal (Overland Park, Kan.), freshman Liz Grove (Winchester, Va.), sophomore Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.) and senior Jacqueline White (Oradell, N.J.), who was fresh off of being named the Landmark Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Breidenthal was a member of the 200 medley relay team along with Green, Grove and senior Emily Boyson (Garland, Texas) that won the first event of the night in 1:59.94. Breidenthal and Grove also finished first in both of their respective individual events, Breidenthal the 200 IM (2:24.50) and the 500 free (5:42.82) and Grove the 100 fly (1:06.56) and the 100 breast (1:15.20).
Green won the 100 back in 1:05.40 and White won the 100 free in 59.06 and both were members of the 200 free relay team along with senior Helen Deal (Palmer, Ark.) and junior Elizabeth Rose (Hamilton, Ohio) that touched first in 1:52.50.
Also picking up victories on the night were sophomore Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.) in the 200 free (2:12.08) and Deal in the 50 free (27.52).
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 24, for a home meet against Landmark Conference opponent Marywood University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the O'Hara Hall Pool.
