PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2015) – The USMMA women's swimming team travelled out to Suffolk County, Long Island, on Wednesday to take on non-conference opponent St. Joseph's. The Mariners defeated the Golden Eagles, 108-86, to move to 3-0 overall in dual meets, while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-4.
Sophomore Nina Demet (Lake Forest, Ill.) and freshman Liz Grove (Winchester, Va.) led the way for Merchant Marine with two individual victories apiece. Demet touched first in the 1,000 freestyle (12:14.03) and the 100 free (1:00.66), while Grove won the 100 butterfly (1:07.57) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.08). Grove was also the anchor of the 200 medley relay team that claimed victory in the first race of the night with a time of 1:59.10.
Four other Mariners had first-place finishes on the night: senior Jacqueline White (Oradell, N.J.) in the 500 free (5:38.33), sophomore Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.) in the 200 free with a season-best time of 2:10.66 (a four-second improvement), freshman Hallie Breidenthal (Overland Park, Kan.) in the 50 free (27.34) and sophomore Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.) in the 200 individual medley (2:27.96). White, Breidenthal and Green were all members of the 200 MR team that touched first, along with Grove.
Picking up personal-best times on the night (all one-second improvements) were freshman Isabelle Hodgkinson (Forest Hill, Md.) in the 200 free with a time of 2:48.60, senior Kelly Snoden (Oak Harbor, Wash.) in the 100 free in 1:16.47 and Green in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.65.
The Mariners return to the pool this weekend, when they travel to New London, Conn., to take on arch-rival Coast Guard. First race is slated for noon at the Bears' Roland Pool.
