Women’s Swimming & Diving Defeats Queens College, 140-79

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2014) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's swimming & diving team travelled to nearby Queens College on Wednesday night for its first dual meet of the season. The Mariners defeated the Knights, 140-79.

Freshmen Hallie Breidenthal (Overland Park, Kan.) and Elizabeth Grove (Winchester, Va.) won the first two individual events of their college careers and both swam legs of the USMMA free relay teams that won the last event of the night. Breidenthal touched first in the 50 free (26.91) and 100 free (59.57), and led off the 200 free relay squad the won in 1:51.37, while Grove won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.37 and the 100 backstroke event in 1:04.71 and was the final leg of the 200FR.

Senior Jacqueline White (Oradell, N.J.) won both the 200 free (2:09.52) and the 100 fly (1:02.85), and was the third leg on the Mariners' 200 medley relay team that led of the meet with a win in 2:01.26. Sophomore Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.) won both distance events, the 1000 free (12:08.62) and the 500 free (5:57.87)

In the diving competitions, senior Elizabeth Jackson (Albany, Ga.) swept both one-meter events with scores of 152.70 and 202.20. Also, earlier on Wednesday, it was announced by the ECAC that Jackson was named the league's Division III South Diver of the Week. That accolade comes a day after the Landmark named her the women's swimming & diving Athlete of the Week. For the full release from the ECAC, click here.
The Mariners are not back in action until after the New Year, when they will travel to Manhattan to take on Hunter College on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The first event against the Hawks is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Hunter's North Pool.
