Women’s Swim & Dive Team Produces Strong Efforts In Season-Opening USMMA Memorial Invite

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2014) – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's swimming & diving team began its 2014-15 campaign with the 2014 USMMA Memorial Invite, inviting in four Division II opponents and one DIII rival. The women had solid performances from a number of team members and won four events on the day.

The Mariners captured first place in two races – the 200 butterfly and the 200 breaststroke – while also winning both the one- and three-meter diving competitions.

Touching first in the 200 fly was senior Jacqueline White (Oradell, N.J.) who swam a 2:16.52. Sophomore Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.) won the 200 breast with time of 2:42.33 and senior diver Elizabeth Jackson (Albany, Ga.) took first place in the one-meter (199.20) and the three-meter (202.80) dives.

Kicking off the race, the 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Elizabeth Grove (Winchester, Va.), Green, White and freshman Hallie Breidenthal (Overland Park, Kan.) placed second and dropped five seconds off their time by touching in 1:55.96. Grove was impressive in her first collegiate meet, finishing in second place in the 100 back with a time of 52.95 and in fourth in the 200 IM in 2:19.95.

Breidenthal also turned heads individually in her first meet, as she came in second place in the 100 free in 57.30 and fourth place in the 50 free with a time of 26.27. Also putting in a strong performance in the 50 free in her first meet of the season was senior Helen Deal (Palmer, Ark.), placing seventh in 27.64.

In the 200 backstroke, White (2:15.60) and Grove (2:18.87) placed second and fourth, respectively, while White and Breidenthal were second and third in the 100 fly with times of 1:02.92 and 1:03.88, respectively.

USMMA returns to the pool on Friday, Dec. 5, when the squad will compete in the TCNJ Invite in Ewing, N.J. for the entire weekend.
