Shields Wins At 149, Nine Wrestlers Place As Mariners Come In Second At Long Island Open

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2019) – In his first collegiate tournament, junior Steven Shields (Metairie, La.) won the 149-pound bracket to lead the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team to a second-place finish (first among Division III teams) at the Long Island Open hosted by Nassau Community College on Saturday. Shields was one of nine Mariners to place at the meet. 

Shields went 4-0 on the day, including a victory over a Division I wrestler from Hofstra in the finals. He also had a quarterfinal win via a pin. 

The eight other USMMA wrestlers who placed were sophomore Luke Gauthier (Forked River, N.J.), who went 3-1 en route to a second-place finish at 165, junior Andrew French (Afton, Minn.), who was 3-1 in his second-place showing at 197, classmate Jace Garza (Holland, Mich.), who came in third at 141 after going 4-1, senior Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.), who was 3-1 and placed third at 184, junior Rodman Rupp (Brick, N.J.), who went 2-2 at 149 en route to a fourth-place finish, sophomore Dominick Esposito (Marlboro, N.J.), who came in fifth at 174 after a 3-1 day, freshman Sam Houston (Wall, N.J.), who was 4-1 at 184 to finish fifth in the bracket, and senior Patrick Hume (Windham, N.H.), who came in sixth at 285 after going 3-2. 

The Mariners had a total of 14 pins at the tournament. Gauthier, Esposito and Hume all led the team with two pins each, while sophomore Alex Puglio (Myerstown, Pa.) at 133, Garza, Rupp, Shields, junior Kieran Duggan (Woodbury, Conn.) at 165, sophomore Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 174, Glantzman and Houston all had one apiece.

Merchant Marine is back at it next Saturday, Dec. 21, when the squad competes in a neutral-site quad hosted by New Jersey City University. The Mariners will take on three nationally-ranked teams at the "Jersey City Duals" - #4 Wabash, #5 Johnson & Wales and #17 Messiah.
