Six Wrestlers Earn All-New York State Honors, Including Cruz And Keil Who Place Third

OSWEGO, N.Y. (Nov. 24, 2019) – The USMMA wrestling team took part in the annual New York State Championship Meet on Sunday, hosted by SUNY Oswego in the Lakers' Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Mariners, who had mostly freshmen and some seniors compete, finished in seventh place as a team out of the 13 teams that scored.

Six different Mariners placed at the meet to earn All-New York State honors, including two who came in third in their respective brackets – freshman James Cruz (Belleville, N.J.) at 174 with a 7-1 record and senior Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio) at 285 with a 4-1 record. Freshman Gavin Bonilla (Baton Rouge, La.) placed fourth at 197, classmate Caleb Kreitter (Huntersville, N.C.) was sixth at 133, and fellow plebes Gavin Nix (Cartersville, Ga.) at 125 and Earl Brewer (Fairfax, Va.) at 197 both came in seventh. 

Also picking up their first collegiate victories on the day were freshman Jake Boyd (Kennesaw, Ga.) with two at 149, and classmates Ryan Malfara (Staten Island, N.Y.) at 174 and Aidan Hicks (Vinita, Okla.) at 285 both with one win. 

The Mariner wrestlers earned a total of 11 pins on the day with Cruz and Bonilla both earning a team-best three each, while Nix had two and Kreitter, Malfara and Brewer all earned one apiece.

The Mariners are back in action Dec. 6-7 when they compete in York College's New Standard Corp. Invitational in York, Pa.
