CLEVELAND (March 11, 2018) – This past Friday, March 9, junior Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) represented the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team at the NCAA National Championship Meet in Ohio. Bunce, who competed in the 197lb. bracket, qualified for nationals after his third-place finish at the Mideast Regional Meet in late February.
Bunce got a tough draw, as he was pitted against the #1 seed in the bracket (and the eventual National Champion) in the opening round on Friday afternoon. He battled strong, but fell to Wartburg College senior Kyle Fank by a narrow 3-0 decision.
Bunce then faced Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Ramsey Bloy in the wrestle-back bracket on Friday evening and lost another close bout via a 3-1 decision.
Wartburg went on to win the National Championships with 136.5 points, well ahead of second place Augsburg, which scored 82 points. Ithaca College rounded out the top-three with 79 points.
