BRONX, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2018) – On Sunday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed in two rounds of the Mount St. Vincent Duals in the Bronx at the Dolphins' Sharp Athletic Center. The Mariners began the day with a tough loss to the 16th-ranked team in the country, WPI, 26-9 but followed that up with a Centennial Conference victory over Muhlenberg, 29-12. With the split, USMMA's record moves to 6-4 (2-0 Centennial).

In the loss to the Engineers, the teams split the first two bouts, with WPI taking 125 via a decision before junior Tyler Craig (Snowhegan, Maine) tied up the score with a 5-4 decision at 133. The Engineers responded with back-to-back major decisions and a fall to go up 17-3, and then earned decisions in three straight (165, 174 and 184) to build their advantage up to 26-3. Juniors Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) and Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) closed out the match with consecutive decisions at 197 and 285, respectively.

In the win over the Mules, freshman Jace Garza (Holland, Mich.) started things off right for the Mariners with a 7-4 decision at 125, followed by a 22-5 technical fall by Craig at 133 that gave Merchant Marine an 8-0 lead. However, Muhlenberg would go on to take a 9-8 lead over the next two bouts with a pin at 141 and a decision at 149.

Freshman Kieran Duggan (Woodbury, Conn.) put the Mariners back ahead with a pin of his own at 157. That was followed by the Mules' last win of the match – a decision at 165. The final four weight classes went the way of USMMA – a 6-4 decision by sophomore Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.) at 174, a pin by sophomore Kurtis Hahn (Winfield, Mo.) at 184 and two more decisions by Bunce and Raigoza to secure the conference win.

In exhibition action against WPI, freshman Kai Rogers (Winfield, Mo.) earned a pin in his bout at 157 and classmate Justin Montanez (Hoboken, N.J.) took a major decision at his bout at 174.
