NEW LONDON, Conn. (Feb. 8, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team lost on the road to arch-rival and nationally-ranked #16 Coast Guard, 31-10, on Wednesday night in non-conference action. In defeat, the Mariners end their dual-meet schedule with a 5-10 record, while the Bears improve to 5-3.
The match began at the 149 weight class and Coast Guard quickly built up a 16-0 lead after a major decision at 149, two straight decisions at 157 and 165 and a pin at 174.
The Mariners responded with three-straight victories, led off by a 15-5 major decision by senior Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) at 184. Sophomore Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) earned three points for Merchant Marine with a 3-1 decision at 197 and classmate Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) did exactly the same at 285.
Coast Guard ended the night with a trio of wins, however, to clinch the team victory and the point in the race for the 2016-17 Superintendents' Trophy, which the Bears now lead, 8.5-3.5.
The Mariners will travel to Stevens Institute in Hoboken, N.J., on Saturday, Feb. 11, for the 2017 Centennial Conference Championships. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. A live video stream of the championships matches will be available at this link.
