Wrestling Picks Up Two Centennial Wins Over Gettysburg And Hopkins


BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 6, 2016) – The USMMA wrestling team earned a pair of Centennial Conference victories on Saturday over Gettysburg College (21-18) and Johns Hopkins University (36-6) at JHU's Goldfarb Gym. The wins improve the Mariners' record to 10-8 (5-3 Centennial).

Four Mariners had victories in both dual matches. At 133, sophomore William Hardin (Oxford, Ala.) earned a forfeit win against the Bullets in the morning and then a 9-2 decision over the Blue Jays' Brandon Tran in the afternoon. Freshman Daniel May (Stafford, Va.) picked up two decisions at 141, defeating Gettysburg's Everett Roach, 6-2, and Hopkins' Connor Mauriello, 8-7.

At 165, senior Mike Maye (Pearl River, N.Y.) won via a 7-0 decision against the Bullets' Brandon Carcufe and then pinned JHU's Alex McLaughlin in 6:09. Classmate Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) earned a decision, 9-2, over the Bullets' Anthony Puca at 197, and also had a pin against the Blue Jays' Miles Gilliam, his coming in 2:46.

The Mariners had five pins over the two matches and then three more in exhibitions for a total of eight on the day. Freshman Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) earned a fall at 184 over Gettysburg's Robby Tarvin in 4:58, while senior Mike Mui (Hingham, Mass.) (125 / 2:18), Maye, Fisher and freshman Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.) (285 / 11 seconds) all had pins in the match against Johns Hopkins.

Also picking up wins against the Blue Jays were junior Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) at 149, a 10-3 decision, and freshman Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) at 157, a 4-2 decision.

In exhibitions, freshman Joseph Fiore (Canadensis, Pa.) pinned his opponent from JHU, Anders Bright, in 1:10 and classmate Montana Walton (Greensboro, Md.) earned a 51-second fall over Hopkins' William Lewis. Senior Matt Hiltz (Woodbine, Md.) had a pin in 3:28 over Ursinus' Patrick Rafferty. Hardin also had a 5-3 sudden victory decision over Ursinus' Colin Monahan.

The Mariners return to action this Wednesday night, Feb. 10, when they play host to arch-rival Coast Guard in Superintendents' Trophy competition. First bout is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. A live video feed of the match can be accessed by following this link.
