Trio Of Freshmen Place In Top-Three At Long Island Open Sunday

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Jan. 3, 2016) – On Sunday, the USMMA wrestling team competed in its first event of the New Year, the Long Island Open, hosted by nearby Nassau Community College. The Mariners had three freshmen place in the top-three at the event, including two who finished second.

Rookies Tyler Craig (Snowhegan, Maine) and Chad Puglio (Myerstown, Pa.) ended their days as runners up, as Craig posted a 1-1 record in the 133-pound weight class, and Puglio did the same in 149. Classmate Dan Dubinsky (Charlotte, N.C.) came in third place at 184.

In the other classes that Merchant Marine took part in during the day, freshman Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) placed in fourth at 157, senior Mike Maye (Pearl River, N.Y.) was fourth in 165, sophomore Daniel Viera (Bentonville, Ark.) came in fourth at 197 and classmate Francis Walter (Mount Prospect, Ill.) also placed fourth at the heavyweight class.

Up next, the Mariners will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., as part of the field of 24 teams for the highly-selective NWCA National Duals over two days later this week. Action gets underway on Friday, Jan. 8, beginning 9 a.m. Results for the event can be tracked by following this link.
