KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 12, 2015) – The USMMA wrestling team hosted the 2015 Mariner Duals on Saturday at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners won their first two matches of the day over Hunter (39-14) and Centenary (28-17), but dropped the finale to Division II LIU Post, 29-15. With the 2-1 record on the day, Merchant Marine improves to 4-2 on the season.
Senior Mike Mui (Hingham, Mass.) had a 3-0 record on the day. He earned forfeit victory in the Hunter match and won at 125 over Centenary's Joe Zargo by a technical fall, 17-0, and over LIU Post's Joe Paterno by a pin in 4:42.
At 174, freshman Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) went 2-0 on the day including a pin just before the first period ended in his bout against Hunter's Nick Brutus. Juniors Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) (184) and Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) (149) and freshmen Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) (157) and Daniel May (Stafford, Va.) (141) all had 2-1 records. One of Twito's and one of May's victroies came via a forfeit.
Picking up one win each at the Mariner Duals were freshman Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) at 141, senior Matt Hiltz (Woodbine, Md.) at 165, sophomore Francis Walter (Mount Prospect, Ill.) at heavyweight and freshman Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.), also at heavyweight in a forfeit.

The Mariners will be back in action in three weeks, after the Holiday Break, when they compete in the Long Island Open on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016. The event is hosted by Nassau Community College in nearby Garden City, N.Y.
