ITHACA, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2015) – The USMMA wrestling team competed at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday, hosted by Cornell University. The Mariners placed 14th at the event out of 26 schools with 22 points and were led by two wrestlers that placed in their respective brackets.

Junior Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) came in sixth place in the 184-pound weight class, while freshman Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.) placed seventh at heavyweight.

Rooney defeated Division I wrestler Michael Fetchet of Columbia University in come-from-behind fashion, 8-6, in the first sudden victory period to begin the day. He lost in the quarterfinal bout next, but rebounded to win two straight in the consolations – one over a DII wrestler from LIU Post and the other over a Centennial Conference foe from NYU – to earn a spot in the fifth-place match. Rooney couldn't get past DI Binghamton's Reginald Williams and ended the day in sixth, earning 10.5 points for the Mariners.

Joest won his first bout of the day over Kade Andrews from SUNY Oswego via a technical fall with the score 17-1. He lost in the quarterfinals, but won his first match in the consolations, 4-2, before falling 3-1 in his second consolation match, which put him in the seventh place match. Joest won by a decision over Matthew Booth of Ithaca to place and take seven points for Merchant Marine.

Freshman Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) earned a 2-2 record on the day in the 157-pound weight class, while classmate Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) earned one win in the 133-pound bracket and junior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) also had one victory on the afternoon at 197.

In the B-bracket, nine other Mariners recorded at least one victory, including three who had two wins – freshman Paul Cavanagh (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) was 2-2 at 165 and took fourth place in the bracket, classmate Montana Walton (Greensboro, Md.) was 2-2 at 174 and rookie Joseph Fiore (Canadensis, Pa.) also went 2-2 at 174.

Up next, the Mariners will travel to York, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 5, for the annual York Invitational. Action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. at the Spartans' Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
