NEW YORK (Feb. 4, 2015) – The USMMA wrestling team lost a Centennial Conference matchup on the road at nationally-ranked NYU on Wednesday night, 28-7, at the Violets' James S. Cole Sports Center. The loss drops the Mariners to 8-10 (6-2 Centennial) on the season, while NYU improves to 16-3 (6-0 Centennial) after also defeating Stevens.
Merchant Marine fell behind 12-0 to start the match, as the Mariners forfeited at 125 and 133. Four straight decisions from 141-165, followed by a major at 174 gave the home squad a 28-0 lead.
At 184, sophomore Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) defeated NYU senior Jon Guarino by a 13-2 major decision to put USMMA on the board. Junior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) followed that with a 9-4 decision over his counterpart from the Violets', junior Brian Anderson. It was Fishers 16th-straight victory. However, the score was still heavily in favor of NYU, 28-7, and both teams wound up forfeiting at the heavyweight class, ending the match.
In an exhibition bout at 157, junior Mike Maye (Pearl River, N.Y.) claimed an 11-1 major decision over NYU freshman Justin Martinez.
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, Feb. 7, when they the All-Academy Championships. USMMA will welcome in Air Force, Army, The Citadel, Coast Guard, Navy, Norwich and VMI for what is sure to be a great event. First bouts are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at O'Hara Hall.
