COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 31, 2015) – The USMMA wrestling team competed in a Centennial Tri-Match on Saturday, hosted by #23 Ursinus College. The Mariners lost to that nationally-ranked hosts, 32-14, but rebounded to defeat Muhlenberg College, 32-18. Merchant Marine moves to 8-9 overall on the season, including a 6-1 mark in Centennial action, which is good for second place in the league.
In the first match of the day, Ursinus jumped out to a 9-0 lead with a decision at 125 and an injury default win at 133. Sophomore Isaac Hammonds (Dover, Ohio) picked up a 4-2 decision at 141 to cut the USMMA deficit to 9-3, however, the Bears notched 10 more points combined with a major decision at 149 and a pin at 157.
Senior Brandon Yeik (Bremerton, Wash.) responded with a pin in 4:40 at 165 and junior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.), who was named Centennial Wrestler of the Week early last week, earned a technical fall (16-0 at 5:52), but it wasn't enough to overcome the #23 team in the nation.
Against Muhlenberg, the Mariners fell behind 12-0 with forfeits at 125 and 133, but rattled off seven straight wins from 141 to 197. Hammonds picked up his second win of the day at 141, an 8-0 major decision. Sophomore Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) earned a 12-5 decision at 149, senior Nic Watson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) had a pin in 2:32 at 157, senior Matt Hiltz (Woodbine, Md.) won by forfeit at 165, Yeik won his second bout of the day with a pin in 1:13 at 174, sophomore Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) was victorious via a major decision at 184 and Fisher earned a 10-7 decision at 197 to put USMMA ahead 32-12.
The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday night, Feb. 4, when they travel to Manhattan to take on nationally-ranked Centennial foe NYU. First bout is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Violets' James S. Cole Sports Center. Live video will be available for the match by following this link.
