EWING TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Jan. 20, 2015) – The USMMA wrestling team lost a close dual match to #29 The College of New Jersey on Tuesday night at the Lions' Packer Hall. The two teams were separated by just three points going into the last bout of the night, but a pin by TCNJ at 285 sealed the home victory. The Mariners fall to 5-8 overall on the season, while the Lions improve to 9-4.
Junior Mike Mui (Hingham, Mass.) and senior Tom Healy (Andover, N.J.) started the night with back-to-back wins for Merchant Marine as Mui recorded an 8-0 major decision at 125 and Healy had a 13-8 decision at 133. The Mariners lost the next five bouts, however, to fall behind the Lions by the score of 19-7.
USMMA rebounded with a 7-4 decision by sophomore Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) at 184 and a pin by junior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) at 197 (over the #14 wrestler in the nation in the weight class) to pull within three points, 19-16. Lion freshman Brandon Simon squandered any chance of a comeback with a pin at the heavyweight class.
The Mariners are back in action this weekend when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to take part in a Centennial Conference tri-match, hosted by Johns Hopkins University. First bout is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Blue Jays' Goldfarb Gymnasium in the Newton White Athletic Center.
