KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team won all three of its matches at O'Hara Hall on Saturday at a Centennial Conference tri-match that also included non-conference opponent Mount St. Vincent. The Mariners defeated conference foes McDaniels (30-15) and Washington and Lee (37-12) before earning the sweep with a decisive 57-0 victory over the Dolphins of Mount St. Vincent.
USMMA has now won four of its last five dual meets and improves to 4-7 overall, including a perfect 3-0 in Centennial Conference action.
Prior to action this morning, the Merchant Marine wrestling program paid tribute to their six graduating seniors - Dom Acevedo (Queens Village, N.Y.), Tom Healy (Andover, N.J.), Greg Stanczuk (West Chester, Pa.), Bernard Watson (Fort Morgan, Colo.), Nic Watson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) and Branden Yeik (Bremerton, Wash.).
Freshman Jake Sherman (Jefferson, Ga.), sophomore Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) and junior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) all led the Mariners with two victories apiece on the day (not including forfeit wins). Sherman defeated Marvin McKinney of McDaniel (Fall 2:36) and Sal Diaz of Washington and Lee (Major Decision 12-0) in the 174 weight class. At 184, Rooney won against Nicholas Cross from McDaniel (Major Decision 9-1) and Ron Tassoni from Washington and Lee (Decision 5-3). And Fisher topped Ricky Tisinger of McDaniel (Fall 4:08) and Evan Kueffner of Washington & Lee (Dec 6-0) at 197.
Also picking up victories on the day were junior Mike Mui (Hingham, Mass.) at 125 against McDaniel's Nathan Frantz via a pin at 1:24, Healy at 133 over Nick Montanye of McDaniel (Major Decision 12-4), sophomore Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) at 149 against McDaniel's Benjamin Mitchell (Major Decision 11-1), freshman Trent Dolby (Las Vegas, Nev.) over Washington & Lee's Alex Pollera at 141 via a 4-2 decision, Nic Watson at 165 against Mount St. Vincent's Patrick Polintan (Decision 2-0) and freshman James Malone (Crofton, Md.) at 174 over CMSV's Karl Schmitt via a pin at 1:23.
The Mariners return to action on Tuesday night, Jan. 20, when they travel to Ewing Township, N.J. to take on nationally-ranked TCNJ. First bout is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lions' Packer Hall.
