Rooney Finishes Fourth, Mui And Fisher Sixth, To Lead Mariners At York’s New Standard Invite Saturday

YORK, Pa. (Dec. 6, 2014) – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team took part in the New Standard Corp Invitational, hosted by York College of Pennsylvania. The Mariners had three wrestlers place within their weight class and were led by sophomore Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.), who finished with a 3-2 record and fourth place finish in the 184-pound weight class. 

Rooney won his first two matches of the day over Alex Price of Delaware Valley (10-4) and Dylen Seybolt of Johnson & Wales (9-8), but lost to Williams' Chris Chorzepa, 11-2, to fall to the consolation bracket. In his first match in the backs, he defeated Connor Gabriel from Delaware Valley by a technical fall seven minutes in to advance to the consolation semifinals against the #13 wrestler in the weight class (D3Wrestle), Nick Zak of York. Rooney lost a very close match to Zak, 9-7, to end the day in fourth in the bracket. 

Also placing for USMMA were juniors Mike Mui (Hingham, Mass.) and Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.). Mui, who was wrestling up a weight class, ended the day in sixth place at 133 with a 2-3 record, while Fisher, who was competing for the first time this season, finished sixth in the 197-pound weight class by going 3-3 throughout the invite.
Other notable performances included Nathan Henkle (Saint Paris, Ohio) going 2-2 in the 141-pound weight class. He won his first two matches to reach the quarterfinals, where he lost to the top seed, Michael Ferinde, from Johnson & Wales. Sophomore Isaac Hammonds (Dover, Ohio) also went 2-2 at 141

Sophomore Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) and junior Matt Watson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) both recorded 1-2 records at 149 and, at 157, junior Mike Maye (Pearl River, N.Y.) went 2-2.

Merchant Marine returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 13, with the first home meet of the season, the Mariner Duals. The Mariners will welcome in WPI, Johnson and Wales, LIU-Post, Roger Williams, Baldwin Wallace and Hunter. Each team will take part in four dual meets throughout the day. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium in O'Hara Hall.
