Rooney’s Two Wins Highlight Mariners’ Performances At New York State Championships Sunday

ITHACA, N.Y. (Nov. 24, 2014) – On Sunday, the USMMA wrestling team took part in the New York State Championships, hosted by Cornell University. The Mariners brought up a small squad to the event and had three wrestlers pick up victories on the day.

Sophomore Patrick Rooney (Belgrade, Minn.) had a 2-2 record on the day in the 184-pound weight class, beginning action in the A-Division bracket against the NCAA Division I Champion from Cornell Gabriel Dean. Rooney lost 16-6 and fell to the consolation bracket, where he picked up a 16-4 victory over Vincent Provenzano of Oneonta and a 5-0 decision over Ryan Richter from Jamestown Community College. Rooney's last match of the day was against Cortland's Tyler Beckwith, the #5 wrestler in the country at the 184 weight class according to Rankings. Beckwith came away with a 14-5 win.

At the 149-pound weight class of the A-Division, sophomore Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) lost in his first match to Matt Barber of Cortland, but rebounded to pick up a 6-1 decision his first consolation bracket match against Cortland's Greg Chery. He lost in the next round, however, to LIU Post's Matt Langan.

Also advancing due to an injury default in his first match of the day was freshman Daniel Viera (Bentonville, Ark.), he lost in the second round of the B-Division, 184-pound championship bracket in a close match against Thomas Anania of Ithaca, 3-1. He finished the day with a 1-2 record.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, when they will travel to York, Pa., to take part in the York Invite. Action is set to get underway at 9 a.m. at the Spartans' Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
