• 76 Student-Athletes Named To Skyline Conference Winter & Spring Academic Honor Roll

    The Skyline Conference announced its Academic Honor Roll for the 2018-19 Winter and 2019 Spring seasons on Tuesday and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy had a total of 76 student-athletes over nine different sports recognized for their hard work in the classroom during their respective seasons.
  • Gizzi Ends Season As NCAA Division III Statistical Champion For Goals Against Average

    Recent USMMA graduate Hannah Gizzi ’19 (Finksburg, Md.) finished the 2019 season as the NCAA Division III Statistical Champion with a 5.60 goals against average, leading all players in the country in the category. She becomes the first Mariner in program history to end a season as a national statistical champ.

    The United States Merchant Marine Academy held its 2019 Awards Convocation on Friday morning at the Ackerman Auditorium as part of Kings Point Weekend festivities, which culminates with commencement exercises on Saturday. Four major athletic award winners were announced during the ceremony – the Male and Female Athletes of the Year as well as the two Coaches of the Year – along with a number of other athletic awards and honors.
  • Wohner Earns ECAC Rookie Of The Year & Second Team Honors; Willard & Gizzi Selected To All-ECAC First Team

    The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced the postseason award winners and All-ECAC Teams on Thursday afternoon and three members of the USMMA women’s lacrosse team were honored. Freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.), who was selected as the ECAC Rookie of the Year, while seniors Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) and Hanna Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) were chosen to the All-ECAC First Team at attack and goalie, respectively, and Wohner also landed on the Second Team at attack.

    On Monday, the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced the All-Region Teams for the 2019 season. USMMA senior goalie Hanna Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) was one of the 256 student-athletes honored with a spot on the All-Region Team, as she was named to the Second Team in the Boardwalk Region.

    The USMMA women’s lacrosse narrowly lost its exciting NCAA First Round matchup against Lebanon Valley on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 13-11 down at Salisbury University in Maryland. The defeat ends the Mariners’ season at 17-1, while the Dutchmen improve to 12-7 and move on to play the host Sea Gulls on Sunday in the Second Round. 
  • NCAA Tournament Preview: Mariners Make A Return Trip To Salisbury For Opening Rounds Of 2019 NCAA Championship

    After repeating as Skyline Conference champions last Saturday, the USMMA women’s lacrosse team begins play in the 2019 NCAA DIII Championship with an opening-round matchup against the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Saturday, May 11 at 1 p.m. The game will take place at Salisbury University’s Sea Gull Stadium in Maryland. The winner will take on the host Sea Gulls the following day on Sunday, May 12th at 1 p.m.

  • Mariners Repeat As Skyline Conference Champs With 22-5 Win Over Farmingdale State

    The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s lacrosse team won its second-straight Skyline Conference Championship on Saturday with a 22-5 home win over Farmingdale State at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners’ record moves to 17-0 on the season, as they’re the last undefeated team left in Division III, and they will move on to the 2019 NCAA DIII Women’s Lacrosse Championship tournament beginning next week. The Rams drop to 8-11 with the loss.
  • Women’s Lax Will Defend Skyline Title After 23-8 Home Win Over SUNY Maritime In Semifinal Action Wednesday

    The USMMA women’s lacrosse team earned its second-straight trip to the Skyline Championship Finals with a 23-8 home victory over visiting SUNY Maritime in the semifinals on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium. The victory kept the Mariners undefeated at 16-0, as they move on to Saturday’s championship game where they’ll look to defend their crown against #2 seed Farmingdale State at home. In defeat, the Privateers end the season 8-6.
  • Mariners Earn Program-Record 15th Win After Closing Out Perfect Regular Season With 22-3 Victory At Purchase

    The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s lacrosse team had 11 different players find the scoresheet en route to its program-record 15th victory of the season, a 22-3 road triumph up at Purchase College on Friday. The Mariners close out the regular season with a perfect 15-0 mark (7-0 Skyline) and will be the #1 seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament next week, while the Panthers end the year 1-10 (0-7 Skyline).

    The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s lacrosse team sailed past visiting Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 19-3, on Tuesday evening at Brooks Stadium. With the win, the Mariners remain undefeated, moving to 14-0 (6-0 Skyline) and tying the program wins record set last year. The victory also clinches the top seed for USMMA in the upcoming Skyline Tournament. The Knights fall to 1-11 (1-5 Skyline) in defeat.

The praise comes after the duo's performances in the Mariners’ two victories last week – 16-6 on Wednesday at St. Joe’s and 15-13 at home Saturday against Stockton.

    Junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) needed five points to reach 100 in her career coming into Merchant Marine’s road Skyline contest with Old Westbury on Tuesday and she recorded a game-high six (four goals and two assists) to lead the Mariners to a 21-5 victory. The win keeps USMMA undefeated at 10-0 (3-0 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 2-9 (1-2 Skyline) in defeat.
