Mariners Win Skyline Regular Season Title With 16-5 Road Win At Mount St. Mary, Will Be #1 Seed In Upcoming Conference Tourney

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 24, 2018) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team secured the #1 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament and earned the Skyline Regular Season Championship with a 16-5 road victory at Mount St. Mary on Tuesday night at the Knights' Kaplan Field. The win improves the Mariners' record to 11-2 (6-0 Skyline), while MSMC falls to 7-7 (4-3 Skyline) in defeat. 

Junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) supplied half of the Mariners' goals on the night, as she finished with a game-high nine points on eight goals and one assist. Three other players had three points each – juniors Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) and Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.). Malone had three goals, Reilly scored twice and dished out one assist and Midas had one tally with two helpers. Junior Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) added a goal to round out USMMA's scorers. 

Junior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made seven saves in over 56 minutes of action and freshman Caitlin Erbacher (Fairborn, Ohio) had one stop in the final three-plus minutes. Gizzi, Willard, Reilly and sophomore Cristina Biendicho (Panama City, Panama) all tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers. Reilly led all players with six draw controls and matched the game-high five groundballs, while Malone had five draw controls and Gizzi scooped up four groundballs. 

Merchant Marine scored the first two goals of the game, but the Knights cut the lead in half with a tally at 24:29. The Mariners went on to take complete control of the game by scoring the next 10 goals to lead 12-1 at halftime and they never looked back. 

For Mount St. Mary, senior Christina Ryan and sophomore Courtney Condron both had a team-best three points. Ryan scored twice and dished out one assist, while Condron had a goal and two helpers. Junior goalie Amanda Picillo suffered the loss despite making 15 saves and freshman Jackie Finkel had one save in just over six minutes of relief. 

The Mariners close out the regular season this Saturday, April 28, when they host Skyline opponent Purchase College on Senior Day. Opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium and is the second contest of a doubleheader with the men's team.
