• Women’s Hoops Powers Past CCNY In Season-Opener Wednesday Night

    The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s basketball team won its home- and season-opener on Wednesday night over City College of New York, 67-36, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners (1-0) led wire-to-wire against the Beavers (0-1), as the hosts led by 10 after one quarter and doubled that lead to 20, 38-18, at halftime. The second half saw much of the same, as USMMA outscored CCNY, 29-18, to cruise to the victory.

    The Skyline Conference announced the Preseason Coaches Poll for women’s basketball on Wednesday and USMMA was picked by the league’s head coaches to finish the season first. The Mariners are coming off their best season in program history in 2018-19, when they went 22-4 including a 16-2 record in conference action and earned their first Skyline Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament.

    The United States Merchant Marine Academy held its 2019 Awards Convocation on Friday morning at the Ackerman Auditorium as part of Kings Point Weekend festivities, which culminates with commencement exercises on Saturday. Four major athletic award winners were announced during the ceremony – the Male and Female Athletes of the Year as well as the two Coaches of the Year – along with a number of other athletic awards and honors.

    On Thursday, the Metropolitan Basketball Writers’ Association (MBWA) announced that three members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s basketball team earned postseason accolades for their roles in the Mariners’ best season in program history. 11th-year head coach Matt Dempsey was selected as the MWBA Division III Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, while freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) earned Second Team All-Met honors and junior Kaleigh D’Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) landed on the Third Team.

    Junior Kaleigh D’Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) became the sixth player in USMMA women’s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, as she scored a game-high 23 points in the Mariners’ 74-51 loss to Smith College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night up at Bowdoin College’s Morrell Gymnasium. The defeat ends Merchant Marine’s magical 2018-19 campaign with a program-best record of 22-4, while the Pioneers improve to 22-6 and move on to second-round action on Saturday.

Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) was chosen by the conference head coaches as the Rookie of the Year, while 11th-year head coach Matt Dempsey was selected as the Coach of the Year. In addition to the Rookie of the Year honors, Hunter also landed on the All-Skyline First Team along with junior Kaleigh D’Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.).

With the victory, the Mariners improve to 21-3 overall, while the Rams end the season with a 10-17 record.

The defeat ended the Mariners’ regular season with a 20-3 record, including a 16-2 mark in Skyline play, which is good for the second-seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament, while the Knights improved to 21-4 and a perfect 18-0 record in Skyline action, clinching the #1 overall seed in next week’s tourney.

The Mariners move to 19-2 (15-1 Skyline) with the victory, adding to the program-record for wins in a season which they broke on Wednesday. Yeshiva falls to 6-16 (3-13 Skyline) with the loss.

  • Women’s Basketball Ranked Eighth In NCAA Atlantic Region

    The NCAA released this season’s first regional rankings for Division III women’s basketball on Wednesday and the DIII WBB Regional Advisory Committee ranked the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy eighth in the Atlantic Region. This is the first time that the Mariners have been regionally ranked in the 19-season history of the program.

This is the league-leading sixth time that Hunter earned a weekly honor this season, as she was Player of the Week once and Rookie of the Week four times.
