PURCHASE, N.Y. (Nov. 26, 2019) – The USMMA women's basketball team won its first road game of the season, earning a 68-41 victory at Skyline opponent Purchase College on Tuesday night. With the win, the Mariners improve to 3-0 (2-0 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 0-5 (0-1 Skyline).
Senior Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) recorded a double-double, tying for the game-high with 18 points while also matching the team-best with 14 rebounds. Sophomore Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) added 15 points and led all players with five steals, while junior Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) rounded out the Mariners' double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) chipped in with seven points and four assists, while sophomore Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) and freshman Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) both scored six points each. Hunter tied Hightower for the team-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) contributed with four points.
The Mariners never trailed in the game, as they built up a 10-point lead towards the end of the first quarter and the advantage reached as high as 17 points in the second before they took a 30-14 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Merchant Marine advanced its lead to 25, 45-20, at 2:33. The biggest lead of the night came after Dahlke drained a three-pointer with just 2:03 to play that put the Mariners up by 31, 68-37.
For Purchase, sophomore Shadai Plowden tied for the game-high with 18 points, while senior Arta Krasniqi brought down 15 rebounds and had three blocks, leading all players on the night in both categories.
Up next, the Mariners will travel back up to Westchester County next Tuesday night, Dec. 3, for a Skyline contest against the conference's newest member, Manhattanville College.
