Mariners Open Skyline Play With 58-41 Home Win Over Sarah Lawrence On Saturday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2019) – In front of a rambunctious, Hawaiian-themed crowd of mostly U.S. Merchant Marine Academy plebes, the USMMA women's basketball team defeated visiting Skyline Conference opponent Sarah Lawrence College, 58-41, on Saturday afternoon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 2-0 (1-0 Skyline), while the Gryphons fall to 0-6 (0-2 Skyline). 

Merchant Marine had two players score in double-figures, as senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led the team with 12 points and sophomore Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) added 11. Both D'Arcy and Dahlke brought down five rebounds apiece, and D'Arcy also added a game-high six assists and four steals. 

Sophomore Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) was the Mariners' top rebounder with 11 boards, while she and freshman Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) both scored seven points each. Sophomore Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) led the USMMA bench with eight points. 

Juniors Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) and Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) both added four points, while senior Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) had three points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals and sophomore Kimberly Palace (Grasonville, Md.) contributed two points. 

The Mariners quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never saw their advantage drop below 10 points the remainder of the game. USMMA reached its largest lead of the game – 24 points – four times throughout the contest, including at 5:54 of the third quarter. 

The closest SLC came down the stretch was in the fourth quarter when the Gryphons cut their deficit to just 13 points three separate times, including with just 2:56 to play. 

Sophomore Camryn Davis scored a game-high 18 points to lead Sarah Lawrence, while junior Melanie Coleman led all players on the day with 12 rebounds and five blocks. Freshman Jordyn Medina brought down 11 boards and freshman Ana Srdanovic added nine points. 

The Mariners will return to action on Tuesday night, Nov. 26, with a road game at Skyline opponent Purchase College beginning at 6 p.m. up in Westchester County. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page
