Women’s Hoops Powers Past CCNY In Season-Opener Wednesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team won its home- and season-opener on Wednesday night over City College of New York, 67-36, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners (1-0) led wire-to-wire against the Beavers (0-1), as the hosts led by 10 after one quarter and doubled that lead to 20, 38-18, at halftime. The second half saw much of the same, as USMMA outscored CCNY, 29-18, to cruise to the victory. 

Senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led all players with 18 points, while also dishing out a career-high nine assists and bringing down seven rebounds. Two other Mariners scored in double-figures, as sophomore Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) drained 13 points and freshman Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) contributed 11 as part of a double-double effort with 10 rebounds. 

Senior Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) recorded seven points and a game-high 13 boards, while sophomore Kimberly Palace (Grasonville, Md.) also had seven points to lead the Mariner bench. 

For City College, freshman Reilly Boehm led the way with 16 points, while sophomore Tianna Fumasoli registered 10 points and classmate Harlean Williams added eight to go along with a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high five blocks. 

The Mariners will have some time off before their next game, as they don't return to action until Saturday, Nov. 23, when they host Skyline Conference opponent Sarah Lawrence.
