Dempsey Named MBWA DIII Coach Of The Year; Hunter Lands On All-Met Second Team, D’Arcy On Third Team

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 25, 2019) – On Thursday, the Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association (MBWA) announced that three members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team earned postseason accolades for their roles in the Mariners' best season in program history. 11th-year head coach Matt Dempsey was selected as the MWBA Division III Women's Basketball Coach of the Year, while freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) earned Second Team All-Met honors and junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) landed on the Third Team.

Dempsey guided USMMA to a 22-win season, the most victories in program history, including an 11-game winning streak to start the year. The Mariners finished the regular season as the #2 seed in the Skyline Tournament and went on to upset top-seeded Mount St. Mary in the finals to claim the program's first conference championship and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Hunter was already named to two other All-Region Teams shortly after the season ended, as she earned All-Atlantic Region and ECAC DIII All-Star selections. She was also the Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year. Hunter was selected by the Skyline head coaches as the conference's Rookie of the Year and to the First Team All-Skyline. She finished the year averaging a double-double with a team-best 16.7 points per game and 12.2 rebounds per game.

D'Arcy was also selected by the Skyline head coaches to the First Team All-Conference after the tri-captain averaged 14.0 points per game to go along with a .376 shooting percentage, which ranked eighth in the Skyline. The junior closed out the season by reaching 1,000 career points after a 23-point performance in the NCAA Tournament first round game.

Hunter and D'Arcy are currently competing for USMMA's women's outdoor track & field team and are having excellent performances for the Mariners, as both of them have qualified for the regional ECAC Championship Meet in May.
