Mariners Triumph Over Yeshiva, 70-43, On Think Pink Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team sailed past Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University, 70-43, Sunday afternoon in their final home game of the regular season at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners move to 19-2 (15-1 Skyline) with the victory, adding to the program-record for wins in a season which they broke on Wednesday. Yeshiva falls to 6-16 (3-13 Skyline) with the loss. 

Four USMMA players scored in double-figures, as junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) dropped a team-high 15 points to go along with a team-best three blocks. D'Arcy also tied for a team-high in steals with four and snatched nine boards, just missing out on a double-double. Classmates Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) and Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) scored 11 points and 10 points, respectively, in the contest. Hightower brought down seven boards on the afternoon. 

Sophomore Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) contributed 11 points off the bench, while freshman Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) drained 10 points and classmate Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with eight points. 

 The Mariners dominated the Maccabees on the boards, 51-39, while holding them to just 29% shooting from the field (18-for-62) on the afternoon. 

Both teams played competitively in first quarter, with USMMA leading by no more than two throughout the first six and half minutes. D'Arcy's jumpshot at the 3:20 mark jumpstarted a 14-4 run down the stretch to put the Mariners in front 24-12. 

The second quarter is when the Mariners took firm control of the contest. USMMA held Yeshiva to 8.3% shooting (1-for-12) building a 39-16 halftime advantage. 

The Mariners lengthened their lead in the third, going up by as much as 36, to hold a 59-23 advantage after three. Yeshiva outscored USMMA 20-11 in the fourth quarter, but still fell short 70-43. 

For the Macs, senior Nicole Bick led the way with 15 points and freshman Elizabeth Pavel hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench.
