KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated visiting Skyline Conference opponent Purchase College, 50-22, on Tuesday night in the 2018-19 season-opener. With the victory, the Mariners begin the year 1-0 (1-0 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 1-3 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.
Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) recorded a double-double in her first collegiate game, scoring a team-high 12 points and leading all players with 15 rebounds. 10 of Hunter's 12 points were on second chance efforts after offensive rebounds.
Two other Mariners produced double-digit scoring efforts, as both junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) and freshman Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in with 11 points apiece. Junior Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) added eight points and 11 boards, while sophomore Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) contributed six points off the bench.
The Mariners held Purchase to just 17.9-percent shooting on the night (10-for-56), while also winning the battle of the boards, 54-33.
For Purchase, senior Amber Jones had 68-percent of the Panthers' offense, as she drained a game-high 15 points. Junior Alfa DeJesus scored five points and freshman Shadai Plowden brought down a team-high six rebounds.
The Mariners return to action next Tuesday, Nov. 27, when they travel into Manhattan for a non-conference matchup against Hunter College.
