NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2018) – The USMMA women's basketball team had its remarkable 2017-18 campaign come to a close of Thursday night in the semifinals of the Skyline Tournament with a 57-34 loss to top-seeded Mount St. Mary at the Knights' Kaplan Center. In defeat, the Mariners end the season with a 17-9 record – the 17 wins are the most in a single season in program history – while MSMC improves to 21-5 and will face #2 seed Old Westbury in the Skyline Championship game this Saturday.
Sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led all players in the game with 12 points and tied senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) for the team-high with nine rebounds. Carmon also drained nine points for Merchant Marine. Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) added six points, while sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) contributed four and senior Gabrielle Slazar (Memphis, Tenn.) had three.
Mount St. Mary scored the first four points of the game, but the Mariners fought back to tie the score up at 6-6 at 1:56 of the first quarter. The Knights held USMMA scoreless for the next six minutes of game-action, as the hosts scored 16-straight points to go ahead 22-6 at 7:07 of the second quarter. They would go on to take a 35-13 advantage into the halftime break.
Merchant Marine only got the lead back under 20 points just once in the second half after the first basket of the third quarter, but MSMC maintained a healthy lead throughout the final 20 minutes to claim the victory.
Two players scored in double-figures for the Knights – freshman Katie Smith drained 11 and junior Kayla Cleare had 10. Junior Elizabeth Limonta chipped in with a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench for Mount St. Mary.
