KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team held off Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, 72-69, in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The win improves the Mariners record to 13-5 (9-3 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 7-11 (5-6 Skyline) with the defeat.

Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) recorded her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) added 19 points (11 coming in the second half) and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) chipped in 16 points, as she knocked down four three-pointers and posted a team-best five steals on the afternoon. Sophomores Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) and Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) brought down six boards apiece, with Hightower adding eight points and Peters scoring two. Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) rounded out the Mariner scorers with five points.
As a team, the Mariners went 23-for-24 from the charity stripe on the afternoon, including a perfect 12-for-12 from Carmon. They forced 27 turnovers, including three in the last four possessions of the overtime period.
The first half saw the Mariners jump out to as high as an eight point lead, 13-4, in the first quarter, but the Bears fought back to take the lead in the second and held a 35-28 advantage at halftime.
The Bears lead hit a game-high 16 points with 3:14 remaining in the third, when a layup pushed their advantage to 48-32. Merchant Marine went on a furious 14-0 run from there, however, holding the Bears scoreless to cut the deficit down to 48-46 at the end of the third quarter.
The Mariners led by as many as nine points, 60-51, with 5:05 to go, but the Bears fought all the way back to tie the score up at 64-64 after 13-4 run. The visitors tied the game on a three-pointer with five seconds remaining.
The Bears knocked down a three at the 4:26 mark of overtime to go in front 67-64. Hightower drain a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 67-66. Both teams would go perfect on consecutive trips to the free-throw line and keep the score within one, 69-68. Carmon's jumper with 2:18 to go put the Mariners in front for good, 70-69. The Bears had four chances to go back in front but failed to convert and Carmon added two free throws in the final 10 seconds to help secure the win.
For St. Joe's, freshman Kelly O'Donnell led all players in the game with 32 points and grabbed 10 boards for a double-double. Junior Victoria Porcasi registered 17 points in the contest, while senior Taylor Raccuglia and sophomore Catherine Drago both hauled in seven rebounds and registered three blocks.
